What Time Does a CS2 Trade Lock End?
Since Valve's change rolled out in late February 2026, a CS2 trade lock no longer ends at a single shared daily time — each item runs its own 7-day (168-hour) timer that starts when the item entered your inventory and is rounded up to the next full hour. So a skin you acquired at 10:57 unlocks seven days later at 11:00, not at a fixed daily cutoff. The authoritative time for any single item is the "Tradable After" line in its Steam inventory tooltip.
Updated: 16 September 2026.
What time does a CS2 trade lock end?
A locked item becomes tradable 7 days (168 hours) after it entered your inventory, rounded up to the next full hour (Skinport on X, June 2026; PirateSwap). The timer is per item and starts at the exact moment of acquisition, so the unlock lands at a clean hour boundary rather than a shared daily moment.
Worked example: acquire a skin on a Monday at 14:02 UTC. The 168-hour mark falls the following Monday at 14:02; rounded up to the next full hour, the item unlocks at 15:00 UTC. Total wait: 7 days and 58 minutes.
Why did my skin unlock at a strange time?
Because the timing model changed. Before 2026, every locked item on the Steam Market unlocked in one daily bulk wave at a single fixed time (about 07:00 UTC / 09:00 CEST), regardless of when you acquired it. Valve replaced that with a per-item timer that ends 168 hours after each item enters the inventory (TalkEsport; skin.land). The change rolled out quietly from late February 2026 with no official patch note and was confirmed live by independent trackers before 24 June 2026.
Valve's reason is market stability: the old synchronised unlock created a predictable daily dump — thousands of identical skins became tradable at once and briefly pressured prices. Spreading unlocks across every hour of the day removes that single exploitable window.
On the exact-timing discrepancy: some guides (and RushLayer's own earlier explainer) describe the lock as "exactly 7 × 24 hours." The precise behaviour is 168 hours rounded up to the next full hour, so the real wait is between 168 hours and just under 169 hours depending on how many minutes past the hour you acquired the item. An item acquired exactly on the hour needs no rounding and unlocks at precisely 168 hours.
Does a Steam Market purchase unlock at the same time as a trade?
The unlock time is computed the same way for both — 168 hours from when the item entered your inventory, rounded up to the next full hour. What differs is what you can do while you wait:
- Steam Market purchase: the item is trade-locked. You own it and can equip it in matches, but you cannot re-trade or re-list it until the cooldown clears.
- Item received in a trade: this is where Trade Protection (introduced 16 July 2025) applies. The item is delivered and usable in-game immediately, but for 7 days it cannot be re-traded, sold, consumed, modified, or moved into a Storage Unit, and the sender can reverse the trade during that window (Swap.gg; CaseRush).
So a Market purchase and a received trade can show the same "Tradable After" time, but the trade also carries the reversible, use-but-don't-move protection layer on top.
Trade lock unlock time: worked examples
Every row applies the same rule — round the acquisition time up to the next full hour, then add 7 days. Times are UTC; days are relative to a Monday acquisition.
| Time acquired (UTC) | Rounded up to | Exact unlock (UTC) | Total wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon 09:00 (on the hour) | 09:00 (no rounding) | following Mon 09:00 | 7d 0h 00m |
| Mon 10:57 | 11:00 | following Mon 11:00 | 7d 0h 03m |
| Mon 14:02 | 15:00 | following Mon 15:00 | 7d 0h 58m |
| Mon 18:15 | 19:00 | following Mon 19:00 | 7d 0h 45m |
| Mon 00:30 | 01:00 | following Mon 01:00 | 7d 0h 30m |
| Mon 23:41 | 00:00 (next day) | following Tue 00:00 | 7d 0h 19m |
Two edge cases worth noting: an item acquired exactly on the hour (row 1) unlocks at precisely 168 hours with no rounding, and an item acquired late in the hour near midnight (row 6) rounds up into the next calendar day, so its unlock date is one day later than the acquisition date.
How much cheaper are trade-locked CS2 skins?
Locked copies typically sell about 5 to 10 percent below an instantly tradable copy of the same skin on third-party markets — the discount a buyer accepts for waiting out the lock. We cover the figure, the days-remaining relationship and the risks in full in how much cheaper are trade-locked CS2 skins.
A note on data: RushLayer's own CS2 skins marketplace prices weapons and knives in crypto with fee-inclusive pricing, but it does not currently expose a per-listing trade-lock countdown, so the discount range above is drawn from public marketplace trackers rather than our live listings. We do not publish a per-skin locked-vs-instant table we cannot pull with real numbers.
Can you speed up or remove a CS2 trade lock?
No. A trade lock clears only when its 168-hour timer expires, rounded up to the hour — there is no setting, payment, or service that shortens it, because Valve enforces the cooldown server-side. Any site, bot, or "insider" offering to remove or speed up a lock is a scam; the usual outcome is a fake "unlock" trade that takes your item, or a phishing step that hands over your account. The only real levers are choosing a listing that already has fewer hours left, or simply waiting out the clock.
