How Long Does It Take to Get Paid After Selling a CS2 Skin?

Selling a CS2 skin takes anywhere from a few minutes to about 7 days between trade acceptance and money in your account. The wait is set by three things stacked in sequence: the item's 168-hour (7-day) trade lock or Trade Protection hold, the marketplace's escrow release once it confirms the item, and the payout settlement to your wallet (near-instant for crypto, one to five business days for cards or bank transfer). If the skin is already unlocked, an instant or bot-based marketplace compresses the whole thing to roughly minutes once the trade goes through.

How long does it take to get paid after selling a CS2 skin?

There is no single number, because "getting paid" is three stages, not one. The table below is the payout clock end to end. The dominant variable is whether the skin is unlocked at the moment you sell — everything else is minor by comparison.

Table A — the payout clock by stage

StageTypical durationWhat controls it
Trade lock / Trade Protection hold0 hours if unlocked; up to 168 hours (7 days) if locked or protectedSteam's rolling 168-hour cooldown, timed from trade acceptance; the Trade Protection shield on freshly received items
Trade delivery + account security holdInstant, or 7–15 daysYour Steam Mobile Authenticator: aged and active = instant; missing, recently added or moved = a 7-day or 15-day hold
Marketplace escrow releaseMinutes to ~1–2 daysThe platform's confirmation and anti-fraud model — instant/bot vs a hold (escrow) model
Payout settlementCrypto: minutes to hours; card/bank: 1–5 business daysYour chosen payout method and its network

Read the stages top to bottom: if any one of them is active, it gates the ones after it. A skin sitting inside its 168-hour lock can't be delivered, so escrow and payout haven't even started yet. Once the item is unlocked and your account is secured, the remaining wait is just escrow plus settlement — often the same day, and minutes on a crypto payout.

Why is there a 7-day hold on CS2 skin payouts?

The seven-day figure comes from two separate Steam mechanics that both happen to run for a week, and it's worth keeping them apart.

The trade lock is a cooldown on the item: skins bought on the Steam Community Market or granted by Valve arrive locked for 168 hours and can't be traded or listed during that window. The Trade Protection layer is different — introduced on 15 July 2025, it puts a yellow shield on any item you receive in a trade for seven days, during which the sender can reverse the trade through Steam Support and the receiver can't re-trade, list, or modify it. A reversal doesn't just undo one item: it rolls back the eligible trade and applies a 30-day trading and Steam Community Market cooldown to the items involved.

For a marketplace buying your skin, both mechanics mean the item it just received could be clawed back for a week — so paying you instantly is a real financial risk. That reversal risk, plus the platform's own escrow checks, is why seller funds are held rather than released the second a trade completes. The full mechanic is in our CS2 trade lock explained guide.

When exactly does a CS2 trade lock expire?

This is where most guides are wrong, and it's the detail worth getting right. As of a change that rolled out silently in late February 2026, a trade lock expires exactly 168 hours (7 × 24) after the moment the trade was accepted — on a rolling, per-item clock. A trade accepted at 03:00 unlocks at 03:00 seven days later; one accepted at 21:40 unlocks at 21:40 seven days later.

This replaced the old behaviour, where every locked item unlocked at a single fixed daily time (roughly 15:00 UTC+8), so thousands of skins freed up in one synchronized wave. That fixed-hour system no longer exists — sell pressure is now spread across every hour of the day. Valve shipped the change without a patch note, and it became widely noticed around June 2026, which is why a lot of older "everything unlocks at 9am" advice is stale. To find your own unlock moment, open the item in your inventory and read its "Tradable After" timestamp; because the clock is per-item, two skins bought minutes apart can unlock at different times.

How long do different marketplaces hold seller funds?

Marketplaces take one of two structural approaches, and it decides your speed more than any headline "instant payout" claim:

  • Instant / bot-based platforms receive the item and pay out immediately — but only for items that are already unlocked and transfer cleanly. They reject locked and Trade-Protected items outright, because they can't move (or safely pay for) something that's frozen or reversible. When they accept an item, payout is typically minutes.
  • Hold (escrow) platforms accept locked skins by agreeing a price now and completing the payout once the lock clears. You still wait out Steam's 168 hours — nobody can shorten it — but you lock in today's price instead of watching the market move for a week.

Neither model can beat Steam's clock; they only differ in what they'll accept and when they release funds. The practical takeaway: an unlocked skin plus a crypto payout is the fastest path on either model, and a locked skin is a 7-day wait regardless of where you sell it.

Are trade-locked skins cheaper to buy?

Yes — a trade-locked or Trade-Protected skin generally sells at a discount to the same skin unlocked, because the buyer is accepting up to a week of illiquidity (and, for protected items, a week of reversal risk). That's a liquidity discount, the same logic that prices any asset with a holding period lower than one you can sell today. The size of the discount isn't fixed: it moves with live demand and with how volatile the market is that week, so check current prices before assuming a number rather than trusting a stale figure. We break down when that discount is worth taking in trade-locked CS2 skins: can you sell them, and are they cheaper?.

Can the buyer reverse the trade and take the money back?

For the seven days after a trade completes, yes — Steam's Trade Protection lets the sender reverse an eligible trade via Steam Support, a feature built to undo scams and compromised-account trades. After the seven-day window closes, the trade is permanent. This is the core reason a marketplace won't hand you final, withdrawable money on a just-received item: if it paid you and the trade were then reversed, it would be out both the skin and the cash, and the items involved would also pick up a 30-day cooldown. It's a security feature working as intended, not a marketplace stalling — and it's why "money in your account" and "trade completed" are not the same moment.

How do you get paid faster?

You can't shorten Steam's locks, but you control most of the rest:

  • Sell items that are already unlocked. This removes the single biggest delay entirely. A skin past its 168-hour clock has no lock stage left.
  • Keep the Steam Mobile Authenticator enabled and aged. With the authenticator active for at least seven days, your outgoing trades avoid the 7-day and 15-day security holds. Adding, removing or moving it recently re-triggers those holds — see CS2 trade holds and the Steam Mobile Authenticator.
  • Choose a crypto payout. Crypto settlement is minutes-to-hours versus one to five business days for card or bank rails, so the final stage is where the time saving is easiest to win.

On RushLayer you can sell your CS2 skins for crypto into a withdrawable balance — not a Steam Wallet you can only spend on Steam — with fee-inclusive pricing, so the figure you see is the figure you get. It's a global, crypto-native market spanning players across Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Türkiye, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy among many others. Frequently asked questions

168 hours — seven days. Since a change that rolled out silently in late February 2026, each item's cooldown expires exactly 7 × 24 hours after the trade was accepted, on a rolling per-item clock, rather than at a single fixed daily time as it did before. An item you can't send yet is the single biggest cause of a slow payout.
